A higher dose of 5,000 micrograms (5mg) of folic acid is recommended for women who have previously had a baby with a neural tube defect, or are taking medicine for epilepsy. If you have a family history of neural tube defects then you should also take the higher dose.

Folic acid is responsible for assuring an adequate supply of thymidylate. Thymidylate is one of four nucleotide bases needed to construct DNA molecules. Folic acid is needed during the first few weeks, often before a woman knows she is pregnant. That is why it is so important to start taking folic acid each day, even when you are not planning to get pregnant.

Rheumatoid Arthritis Medications

There are a number of prescription arthritis medications that doctors can prescribe to treat rheumatoid arthritis. Though none of these arthritis medications cure arthritis, they can relieve pain, relieve symptoms, and even slow down the progression of rheumatoid arthritis.

Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS) can relieve pain and inflammation. These drugs can are used as an arthritis medicine and can be purchased over the counter and in prescription form. Some U.S. localities require annual or biannual vaccination even though the “three year” shot is guaranteed by manufacturers to give three years of immunity. If that weren’t bad enough, the three-year shot is often the one-year shot simply relabled to meet local requirements.

Can you avoid the rabies vaccine? If your dog has a well-documented history of health problems, and a low probability of contracting rabies, your veterinarian can apply for a deferral or exemption in many areas. A blood test for antibody titers (pronounced like tighter) showing strong antibodies to the disease may help your case, but will not by itself get you an exemption. Inexplicably, some vets refuse to apply for exemptions and some localities refuse to offer them. Ironically, strong titers, not repeated vaccination, are the only proof that a dog has immunity.

Incidentally, according to the CDC, rabies is no longer transmitted dog to dog in the United States. Your dog can contract rabies only from a wild animal such as a bat, fox or coyote.

Because the USDA , which oversees animal vaccines, will not accept blood tests or foreign studies as proof for vaccine duration of immunity, concerned American dog lovers have banded together to fund the research required to extend the period between vaccinations and to make the vaccine safer.

Nationally-renowned pet vaccination experts Drs. Jean Dodds and Ronald Schultz (Chair of the Department of Pathobiology at the University of Wisconsin, Madison) are volunteering their efforts to study the vaccine. Any individual above 15 years and 6 months of age may enroll in driver education courses. On completion of the course, a practice permit may be obtained from the driver’s license division that allows driving with a licensed parent, guardian or spouse. Subsequently, the person has to visit a driver’s license office to show proof of registration for a driver’s education course. This is followed by a written test. Each course must include instruction in motor vehicle insurance and the effect of drugs and alcohol on an operator of a motor vehicle.

The training consists of not less than 30 hours, excluding time taken for meals. It should have rest breaks and a ceremony for the insurance of a certificate upon completion of the course. A course in driver’s education also includes, instructions designed to teach a student the proper attitude for safe driving and the adverse effects of disturbed emotions on a driver. It also states the consequences of physical handicaps on the ability to drive. It recognizes the effects of alcohol and drugs on driving.

These courses state the grounds for revocation of a driver’s license and explain the requirements for the registration of a vehicle. They help to identify signs designating illegal parking, hand signals and the meaning of the different colors of traffic lights. The legal and moral responsibilities in case of an accident are also outlined, as a part of the curriculum of these courses.

Most courses give a briefing on the names of different highway systems and the organizations that supervise the maintenance of and enforce the traffic laws on each system. Dark Circles Under the Eyes – A Telltale Sign of Ill Health

This website does not answer question about specific diseases, which is a job for a trained physician. On this occasion, however, I’m prepared to make an exception. At a recent party I was accosted by a stranger who wanted to know about the cause of the dark bags under her eyes. Since I wanted to get back to the fun and games as quickly as possible, I promised to post a detailed answer on this site a.s.a.p. Here it that response for her, and anyone else who suffers from this particular disfigurement.

Many people develop dark circles under their eyes, especially as they age. It’s a useful early warning signal that shouldn’t be ignored, because it’s generally a non-specific sign of poor health. The skin around the eye lids is the thinnest in the body. It’s about a quarter the thickness of the skin elsewhere, and gets progressively thinner as we age. This means that the veins are particularly visible in this area, particularly when they’re filled with dark, deoxygenated blood. This is a particular problem for people with deep eye sockets, or a large Roman nose, since these features tend to cast shadows around the eyes. Genetic factors also play a part, since some folk are born with thinner, paler skin than others, which makes their veins more prominent.

Given this physiological background, what are the things which produce those cosmetically unbecoming ‘panda’ eyes? If we’re anemic, our blood becomes darker at the end of its journey around the body than it does when it has a full complement of oxygenated red blood cells. This is most noticeable around the eyes, lips and finger nails. Allergies are other common contributory factors, for the venous blood leaving the eyes drains through the nasal cavities. As a result the circulatory flow – stale blood out and new blood in – can easily be obstructed if the nose is congested following infections or swellings caused by hay fever or allergic rhinitis. But by far the commonest cause of those tell-tale black circles is a lack of deep, refreshing sleep. This impairs the general health of the body and reduces the efficiency of its cardio-respiratory system. The skin grows grey and sallow at these times because it’s carrying a higher proportion of deoxygenated blood. These changes will always be more obvious around the eyes, because it’s there we really are ‘thin skinned’. To make matters worse, when we’re short of sleep we’re prone to rub our eyes. This produces what amounts to a self-inflicted bruise. The friction ruptures the haemoglobin molecules in the blood leading to a progressive series of degenerative changes. The haemoglobin is broken down first into biliverdin, which is green, then to bilirubin which is yellow, and finally to haemosiderin, which is golden brown.

The remedy then is simple. The first prophylactic is to make a regular practice of getting a good night’s sleep. The second is to overcome the temptation to rub the eyes. The next, to get plenty of aerobic exercise, to improve the circulation and bring the colour to the cheeks and eyes. And the fourth to eat plenty of iron-rich foods – liver, wholemeal bread, figs and dried apricots and dark green leafy vegetables – to help reduce the risk of iron-deficiency anemia. If these measures fail, and you have reason to question your general health, consult your doctor.
