Advanced Cancer Treatment

Wednesday, June 30th, 2010

Cancer needs to be cured to the earliest once it is detected. It becomes difficult to cure it at an advanced stage. But today science and medicine has grown to such an extent that there are advanced cancer treatments available. Such treatments would be recommended by the doctor if necessary.

Advanced cancer treatments would have chemotherapy, radiotherapy to even surgery. This would depend on the type of cancer that is detected. Chemotherapy is recommended for patients suffering from lung cancer, myeloid leukemia, choriocarcinoma, etc. Chemotherapy also has side effects like loosing hair, vomiting, nausea, diarrhea, mood swings, etc.

Surgery may also be suggested by the doctor as an advanced cancer treatment. Here the part that contains the cancer is operated. At times doctors even use a grouping of surgery and chemotherapy. This is normally used for patients who suffer from breast cancer, wilms’ tumor, ovarian cancer, ewing sarcoma, colorectal cancer etc. the surgery might take some time to fully cure and there are lots of drugs given to reduce the pain. Such an advanced cancer treatment is given when the patient is in the latter stage of cancer.

Some doctors recommend radiotherapy for patients as an advanced cancer treatment. At times a grouping of radiotherapy and chemotherapy has been adopted. This is done on patients suffering from anal cancer, lymphoma, cervical cancer, neck cancer, lung cancer and head cancer.

Some cancers have no cure at all. In such a situation there are therapies that would help the patient to decrease the symptoms. There are drugs also given in order to reduce the pain. Therapies is only to reduce the symptoms, it cannot fully cure cancer. People suffering from cancer are normally in a state of shock when told about the problem they have. It is the responsibility of the doctor to control the emotions of the patient. Some people even get into depression.

It has been noted here that the earlier the cancer is detected the better it is for the patient. This is because there is a cure for it. But if the cancer is in an advanced stage then the patient would have to opt for advanced cancer treatments. Some of the cancers when in the last stage are totally not curable. Such patients would suffer from a lot of trauma and need lots of support from family and friends. There are many ways to control cancer and get rid of it. Getting the help of a good doctor and also taking good care of your health would ensure that cancer is cured totally.

Cancer Information – Preparing for the Worst

Monday, June 28th, 2010

According to the 2007 report of the World Health Organization, the next thirty years will witness a significant global rise, in the number of deaths due to non-communicable diseases, especially cancer. This prediction is mainly due to the ageing of the population of the world.

However, even without that bit of news, we are aware of cancer being a major killer. But we do know that a cancer, when detected in its earliest stages, is generally curable. Hence, it is advisable to make sure that we are privy to various kinds of cancer information.

To begin with, it helps if you know about the different common types of cancer. Among the most common are bladder cancer, breast cancer, colon cancer, skin cancer, and prostate cancer.

Leukemia is another common type, where the cancer forms in the tissues where blood is formed, such as in the bone marrow. This then leads to the production of a large number of blood cells, and these large numbers of blood cells then enter the blood stream.

If you have a suspicious looking mole, you really should have it checked, as you do not want to risk it’s being cancerous. It may be nothing, but you really should not sit on it worrying that it might be melanoma. The word “melanoma” comes from “melanocytes”. Melanocytes are the cells in which melanin pigment is formed. Melanoma is a type of skin cancer that begins in these cells.

NHL (Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma) is yet another common form of cancer. This refers to a the growth of a large group of cancers that affect the immunity system. The symptoms of non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma are those of fever and weight loss, a sure sign that the immunity system has been affected. This is a cancer that can affect any age group, and its treatment is completely dependent on the stage of detection of the cancer.

Of course, these are only a few of the many kinds of cancers that afflict people all over the world. There are cancers that can be easily treated, and those that cannot. On the Internet, there are various sites that are devoted to providing cancer information. So you have the official sites, websites created by cancer specialists, and sites created and maintained by people who have either battled cancer or know people who have.

So, at least if you are looking for basic information, there are a large number of authoritative websites that provide cancer information. Prepare yourself with all the cancer information that you can, so that you will be better placed to deal with the countless problems that a cancer brings in its wake.

Does The Acai Berry Destroy Cancer Cells In Humans?

Friday, June 25th, 2010

Hundreds of years ago when the Europeans made contact with the new world in the Amazon region, certain indigenous plants became extinct shortly after their arrival due to the lack of resistance to diseases brought over from Europe. Some of the trees that did survive were palm trees that produce the acai berry twice a year.

Why did these trees fair so well?

This fruit is remarkably rich in a wide range of nutrients and trace elements. The acai palm could also survive when standing submerged in water for up to a year. It is this ability to resist disease and survive that is also passed on to those who consume its fruit. So rich in nutrients are the acai fruit that people could survive on it alone for up to six months before showing signs of malnutrition.

One reason so little was known about the acai berries until a few years ago is that they are highly perishable and normally used immediately after picking. They are now freeze dried and converted into acai powder. Products such as acai juice made from the little purple fruit have only been available for about 7 years.

This has led to the University of Florida to conduct a study of the benefits of acai in humans. Its research was an important step toward learning what people may gain from using acai berry supplements. Study results showed extracts from acai berries triggered a self-destruct response in up to 86 percent of leukemia cells tested. Researchers cautioned that the study was not intended to show whether compounds found in acai could prevent leukemia in people. However, they added that compounds found to show good activity against cancer cells in a model system are most likely to have beneficial effects in our bodies.

The next study to be done by U of FL will investigate the effects of acai’s antioxidants on healthy human subjects. The study will determine how well the compounds are absorbed into the blood, and how they may effect blood pressure, cholesterol levels and other related health indicators since there is still at least 50 as-yet unidentified compounds.

How is Alcohol Affecting Your Weight?

Friday, June 25th, 2010

So you’ve been exercising regularly, and cutting back on your calories to meet your weight loss goals. Everything is going great with your new changes but you notice the number on the scale isn’t moving much and your body isn’t changing shape as quickly as you’d hoped. There may be one more habit interfering with your weight loss efforts- -alcohol. Perhaps you enjoy a glass of wine with dinner, have a couple of beers while watching the big game, or even cocktails on a Saturday night with friends. All common practices but they may be getting in the way of your weight loss efforts.

Alcoholic beverages have been enjoyed throughout recorded history. For some, a drink with dinner may be relaxing. Others may enjoy the inhibitions that alcohol can create to “let loose” with friends. Many people drink for the health benefits. After-all, evidence shows that moderate drinking, especially red wine, may lower the risk of heart disease. No matter what your reasons are for drinking, alcohol can interfere with your weight loss goals.

Alcohol is a product of fermenting carbohydrates- both sugars and starches. This means it does provide calories. Specifically it provides 7 calories for every gram compared to 4 calories per gram of carbohydrates and protein, and 9 calories per gram of fat. Drinking 4 (12 ounce) beers will supply 600 calories. To burn those calories, a person would need to walk non-stop for 3 hours. Skipping the cab ride and walking home may be a strategy but for most of us a 3 hour walk is a bit daunting even when we are in good shape.

Although wine contains fewer calories than beer, this can also lead to extra calories. Having a glass of wine provides 100 calories, but this is dependent on the glass size. A serving size of wine is 5-ounces. The larger wine glasses hold about 10 ounces turning your one glass of wine into two glasses. To put this into perspective, drinking two glasses of wine each night with dinner will add an extra 200 calories each day. If these calories are not burned through exercise and daily activity it can lead to a 20 pound weight gain in a year.

Adding juice, creams, and sodas to cocktails will increase the calorie level beyond what the alcohol is already providing. Be careful of what you are drinking. In some cases, one drink provides more calories than an entire meal! Here are the drinks that top the scales for most calories-

Long Island Iced Tea: 780 calories

Margarita: 740 calories

Pina Colada: 644 calories

White Russian: 425 calories

Sex on the Beach: 356 calories

Mai Tai: 350 calories

Lemon Drop: 223 calories

Besides adding calories, alcohol may affect your weight for other reasons. Some evidence suggests drinking alcoholic beverages may stimulate your appetite and cause you to eat more than you normally would. It also decreases your inhibitions so you don’t care how much more you are eating. How many times have you enjoyed chips and salsa with your margaritas while out with friends? How many chips did you eat? Who knows- all you remember is the waiter bringing three or four refills of the chip bowl.

Another factor to take into account is that your body processes alcohol first, before fat, protein, or carbohydrates which may slow down the burning of fat. There is also evidence that drinking too much seems to increase fat carried in the stomach area- otherwise known as the beer belly. Studies show that people with a higher amount of fat in the abdominal region are at a greater risk of heart disease.

Ok, this is looking dreary but it doesn’t mean you can never enjoy alcohol again. It just means that it is time to take inventory to see how much you are drinking and pay attention to how many calories your favorite drinks supply. Learn how to enjoy alcohol in moderation so you don’t end up sabotaging your weight loss efforts.

Causes of Chronic Kidney Failure

Thursday, June 24th, 2010

Chronic kidney failure is a condition you generally don’t even know you have until your kidney has suffered substantial and loss of function. As with a number of other dangerous and potentially life-threatening diseases, there are no symptoms in the early stages of the disease.

Many illnesses can cause chronic kidney failure, including diabetes and high blood pressure. Most people with CRF need to take medications. Some need dialysis.

Kidney failure can make you very sick and require hospitalization. Approximately ten percent of the time, it results from a severe allergic reaction to medicines. This is called interstitial nephritis. People with interstitial nephritis generally recover. Their kidneys begin working normally again after a few weeks. Other patients, however, may need a year to get better. The patient’s previous health, the severity of the illness, and the results of a kidney biopsy will help a doctor determine how long recovery it will take.

Symptoms of Chronic Kidney Failure

Chronic kidney failure symptoms may include:

*anemia
*bleeding
*blood in stools or vomit
*easy bruising
*excessive urine output
*insufficient urine flow
*lowered mental alertness
*muscle cramps
*muscle twitches
*nocturia (nighttime urination)
*a numb sensation in the extremities
*seizures
*sleep disorders
*uremic frost (deposits of white crystals in and on the skin)
*yellow-brown skin color.

Treatment

Treatment for may include:

*Stopping the medicines that cause the illness or that might damage your kidneys.
*Treating infections and other problems such as diabetes and high blood pressure.
*Other treatments such as steroids.
*Dialysis.
*Removal.
*Transplantation.

To avoid interstitial nephritis, you should never take any prescription medicines, over-the-counter medicines, herbal or nutrition supplements without consulting your doctor.

Also be sure to take medicines for diabetes and high blood pressure regularly, and follow your doctor’s instructions carefully.

Will Avian Flu Become Pandemic?

Wednesday, June 23rd, 2010

Experts are saying that Avian Flu or Bird Flu could become Pandemic at some time in the future, and it could affect the human race. The World Health Organization has recognized that there could be a problem. Governments have been urged to update all their plans for counteracting any possibility of this happening.

Estimates have been made that something like 50 million deaths could be expected if this flu developed in to a strain that could be passed on by humans.

Pandemic Flu, means an outbreak of a flu strain that has reached different countries that have no geographical connection. There is NO Pandemic Flu at the moment but the authorities are concerned about an outbreak of a virus in South East Asia that has killed a number of people.

The flu has been seen for some time in birds, especially Chickens, which has led to millions of birds being killed. The strain involved is H5N1 and has been found in Vietnam, Thailand and Cambodia, only a small number of people have so far died and it would appear that they almost all, had contact with birds.

The virus moves easily between birds, and sometimes it has obviously passed to humans, but at this stage it does not appear to have the ability to transfer from Human to Human, but that is not to say that sometime in the future the virus could not mutate, so that it can transfer easily.

The figures that are forecast are based usually on previous Pandemic Viruses that have hit the world, so it really could be anyone’s guess. The people most at risk would normally of course be the weak the elderly and the very young, but this kind of virus would be unpredictable, so it could affect healthy people just as much.

Vaccines are currently being produced, but they can take months to develop and then of course they have to be manufactured in millions to cope with any situation that might arise.

There is currently one drug being manufactured which is supposed to beat the Avian Flu, but it is in such short supply, that in certain cities of the world it is fetching more than the street price of Heroin.

There is absolutely no need to panic, because this particular virus might never develop in to being a problem for humanity, and most countries have contingency plans for a flu pandemic, because they do happen from time to time, thankfully not too frequently. In the last century the 1900′s there were three. If you do a search in Google, you will find a lot more information on Avian Flu.

My advice would be to eat healthy food and try to make sure that your Immune System is functioning as efficiently as possible, Don’t worry and if you would like something to help your immune system cope with everyday illnesses better, Please look at my websites

Alternative Treatment and Herbal Medicines For Breast Cancer

Wednesday, June 23rd, 2010

Cancer requires scrupulous medical and surgical treatment. Nonetheless, certain alternative therapies may play an adjunctive role in its care.

Herbal Medicine

Herbalists have long recommended tropical periwinkle to treat breast cancer and other malignancies. Indeed, a periwinkle alkaloid is used to make vincristine, a very potent chemotherapy agent. Oncologists stress, however, that this drug should be used only under careful medical supervision rather than to resort to herbal periwinkle extracts, which can be highly toxic.

Meditation, Self Hypnosis And Visualization

Studies indicate that women with advanced breast cancer who participate in group support sessions that include these techniques have significantly longer survival rates than those who do not. Scientists have not yet been able to explain this effect, but some theorize that the methods mobilize the immune system to fight the further spread of cancer.

Nutrition Therapy

Some nutritionists recommend daily supplements of beta carotene (precursor to vitamin A) and vitamins C and E, both to help prevent cancer and to slow its growth. However, studies suggest that foods high in these antioxidants are more effective. Good sources of beta carotene are orange and dark green vegetables and yellow and orange fruits; of vitamin C, many fruits and vegetables, especially citrus fruits and bell peppers; of vitamin E, wheat germ, legumes, seafood, and poultry. Although the role of other dietary components remains controversial, some studies suggest that a low-fat diet may cut the risk of breast cancer and its recurrence. Such a regimen requires limiting the intake of all fats, especially those from animals, as well as animal protein, while increasing foods high in fiber, such as whole grain products and fresh fruits and vegetables. Other nutrition therapists and some naturopaths may recommend extreme macrobiotic and other restricted, low calorie diets for breast cancer patients. Oncologists warn that these diets should be avoided because they do not provide adequate calories, protein, and other nutrients that the body needs for recovery or to prevent the wasting that occurs in advanced cancer. Yog regular practice of yoga, meditation, and other relaxation techniques can help alleviate the stress and anxiety caused by cancer, which in turn may boost immune system function.

Self Treatment

Increasingly, women are expected to playa decision making role in their overall treatment. This demands being well informed and not hesitating to question your doctor and voice your concerns. Under the best of circumstances, a diagnosis of breast cancer is psychologically devastating. Joining a support group such as the American Cancer Society’s Reach to Recovery program, or simply talking to women who have recovered from breast cancer, can be reassuring. Concerns about physical appearance following a mastectomy are normal. However, women who do not undergo immediate breast reconstruction are usually relieved to find that, with a well fit prosthesis, they can wear most of their clothing without anyone being able to tell they have had this surgery. Initially, use a temporary prosthesis such as cotton fluff inserted into your regular bra, or one that is slightly larger to accommodate bandages. lake this to the hospital with you to avoid the stress of finding something to wear for the trip home. After healing is complete, plan to shop for a permanent prosthesis. Some regular lingerie departments sell breast prostheses, but you may feel more comfortable and find a wider selection at a specialty shop. Make sure that you tryon several different types. Prices vary, but many insurance policies and Medicare cover at least part of the cost. If you cannot find a ready-made prosthesis that looks and feels right, consider investing in a customized one made to match exactly the contour of your other breast.

A prosthesis usually is not necessary after a lumpectomy, but a bra should be worn day and night for several days following surgery to prevent traction of the wound and to help the breast regain its previous shape. Self help measures can help to minimize common complications affecting the arm and hand on the mastectomy side. To minimize swelling, exercise your arm as soon as your surgeon says it is okay. Lift it as high as you comfortably can several times a day to promote the flow of lymph. Also, “walk” your fingers up a wall as high as possible and do isometric, or pumping, exercises for the hand such as squeezing a rubber ball. If arm swelling still occurs, talk to your doctor about wearing an elastic sleeve to reduce swelling and improve lymph flow. If lymph nodes have been removed, the arm and hand on that side are more vulnerable to infection. It is best to avoid anything that constricts or burdens them. Wear loose fitting clothing and switch your watch and purse to the opposite arm. Also have blood drawn or blood pressure measured on the opposite arm. Try to minimize cuts or injuries; for example, use an electric razor if you shave underarm hair; wear protective gloves for gardening and other tasks; and use special care when trimming nails and cuticles. If you do get a cut or burn, wash it immediately with soap and water and apply an antiseptic plus an antibiotic cream. Consult your doctor promptly if an infection develops.

Other Causes of Breast Symptoms

Many women experience swelling and tenderness of the breasts as part of premenstrual syndrome. Benign fibrocystic breast lumps are also exceedingly common. Nursing mothers often develop mastitis, a bacterial breast infection.

How To Deal With Bad Circulation During Pregnancy

Wednesday, June 23rd, 2010

The circulatory system undergoes several changes during pregnancy. One of the most frequently-encountered problems which women face during the second and third trimesters is bad circulation in pregnancy, particularly leg cramps. This sudden stiffening of the leg muscles can sometimes be very painful. The reasons for developing such cramps during pregnancy are not clear; however changes in blood circulation during pregnancy, the stress on the leg muscles caused by carrying the extra weight of the baby are cited as probable factors contributing to the cramps.

While bad circulation in pregnancy does not pose a threat, if it is accompanied by redness, swelling or a warm feeling, you should consult your doctor. There are very simple exercises which could help you prevent leg cramps during pregnancy. Stretching your legs before you go to sleep could help in the reduction of stress on your leg muscles. When you straighten your legs, you must stretch your heels first and do some circular motions with your toes, clock and anti clock-wise. While doing the exercises, avoid pointing your toes.

The other thing you need to avoid is to remaining one position, standing or sitting, for a long period of time. Being in one position would restrict the blood flow and can cause circulatory problems. During pregnancy, some simple but effective exercises like walking promotes blood circulation. Leg cramps can also be treated with gentle massage or application of a warm towel round the legs

It is not uncommon to feel a bit light-headed during pregnancy. This is due to the fact that during this period, the cardiovascular system can undergo some very quick changes, with heart rate going up and the heart pumping more blood per minute. Even the quantum of blood in your body increases by 40 to 45%. During normal pregnancy, you would experience a reduction in blood pressure during the early stages. This reaches its lowest point some time in the middle of pregnancy and then starts to rise till it reaches normal level at the end of pregnancy. While the cardiovascular and the nervous system can handle these changes, at times it fails to do so and it can result in a feeling of dizzy and light-headed. So long as you do not faint as a result of this light-headedness there is no cause for worry. You just have to lie down so that you do not fall down and hurt yourself. If you are in a place where lying down is not possible, you could sit down for some time and try to put your head between your knees.

One of the ways you could prevent this feeling of light-headedness during pregnancy is to always try to lie down on your left, as then it is easy for the blood to flow to your heart and the brain. Here is some more information on the causes of light-headedness during pregnancy and how you can prevent them:

Never change your body position too fast. For instance, if you are lying down, do not get up too fast and if you are sitting, do not stand up with a jerk.

When you are stationary in one position, keep on twirling your legs from one position to the other. This will promote circulation.

Avoid lying down on your back during the second and third semesters. This affects the blood circulation negatively. Your heart rate will increase, blood pressure may drop and you may feel light-headed, dizzy or nausea. Instead it is safer to lie on your side than flat on the back.

Drink enough fluids and eat properly. When you do not eat well, your blood sugar level drops and result in your feeling dizzy and uneasy. If you do not feel like eating at the right time, keep on having small quantities of food at regular intervals.

Iron deficiency anemia is responsible for having fewer amounts of blood cells to carry the oxygen to your brain. Make your diet iron-rich so that you have enough blood to feed your heart and brain.

Arthritis Knee Pain

Tuesday, June 22nd, 2010

Arthritis is the painful swelling of the bodys joints. Although classified under a single term – arthritis, the disease encompasses over a hundred kinds of rheumatic ailments which involve joint inflammation, swelling and stiffness.

Arthritis can strike any part of your body, causing pain and inflammation. Some of these rheumatic disorders can cause disabling and critical physiological problems, and even damage other vital body parts like bones, muscles and internal organs.

The disease does not limit itself to any age group and can afflict anyone, even children. Although the rate and frequency of arthritis rises with advancing age, out of every five sufferers, three are almost always under 65.

Arthritis can result in permanent and irreparable damage in bones, joints, internal organs and even skin, especially if not diagnosed in its early stages and treated immediately.

Osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis are two of the most pervasive forms of arthritis.

What are the Signs and symptoms of arthritis?

Arthritis refers to a set of syndromes which directly involve the bodys joints and muscles. Joint pain, inflammation and stiffness in the joints are indicators of the disease. An inflamed joint exhibits signs of redness, swelling, tenderness and may be warm when touched.

Encasing a majority of joints is the cartilage tissue, a protective shield of tough fibrous matter containing a slippery fluid for smoother movement. When arthritis attacks the joints, it can cause the cartilage to deteriorate, weakening and thinning it down. The resulting inflammation and swelling brings about throbbing pain at every movement.

Different indicators like pain, swelling, or difficulty of movement within the area of a joint for two weeks or more may necessitate a visit to your doctor. As there are many different symptoms of the disease, only a qualified medical practitioner can make the correct diagnosis. It is also important to determine the particular type of arthritis you are suffering from in order to proceed with appropriate treatment.

Insomnia, chronic tiredness, depression or muscle soreness may also be linked to arthritis, which symptoms may develop gradually or appear swiftly and unexpectedly. Some sufferers are unable to carry on with normal day-to-day activities at home and at work due to pain and stiffness in the joints, making movement difficult.

Most of the range of everyday motions including rising from bed in the mornings, slipping buttons into buttonholes, getting dressed, writing, stitching, walking, cooking, going up the stairs, getting up from a sitting position, and even coping with personal hygiene prove difficult due to the pain and stiffness of joints brought on by arthritis. Being unable to move in a normal manner upsets most people more than suffering the pain of throbbing joints.

Consulting a medical practitioner at the earliest time possible will allow you to start immediate medication and therapy to give pain relief and to safeguard your joints. Remedies like avoiding too much stress and anxiety, and by employing the use of protective apparatus to help with movement can assist you in dealing with the disease. It also helps to keep the weight off to take the strain off the hips and knees.

Arthritis management primarily seeks to maintain regularity of movement and help the sufferer cope with day to day tasks.

Glucosamine For Dog Arthritis – Does It Really Work?

Monday, June 21st, 2010

Some say dogs are the best companion anyone could have while others say they are family. That’s the kind of feeling people share with dogs and this is one relationship that does not take into considerations any geographical boundaries, race or creed. German dogs like the German Shepherd and Doberman Pinchers are some of the best guard dogs while the Labrador and the Golden Retriever are treated as the best family dogs.

But a dog comes for a price. He/she is as much susceptible to diseases and other physical ailments or problems as we are. One of the most concerning dog health problems is arthritis in dog. Dog arthritis occurs due to inflammation in the joints and can be divided into two categories: degenerative arthritis and inflammatory arthritis.

The degenerative arthritis or joint disease is also known as osteoarthritis and occurs in dogs when the cartilage starts to degenerate at a rapid pace. The inflammatory joint disease occurs when there is an infection in the joints or there is an immune-mediated disease called as like dog rheumatoid arthritis. This type of immune arthritis in dog can affect multiple joints and is accompanied by anorexia and fever.

There are various dog arthritis treatments available, but the best treatment for dog arthritis is glucosamine. Basically, there are two types of Glucosamine supplements. They are Glucosamine HCL and sulfate. The amount of glucosamine that can be given to your dog depends on the physical condition of your dog.

After many researches about dog arthritis medication, recent studies suggest that liquid glucosamine is better than glucosamine tablets. The reasons include: 1) Liquid glucosamine has many higher absorption rates than solid glucosamine; 2) Liquid glucosamine has much better effectiveness to treat arthritis in dog than glucosamine tablets. If your dog is suffering from dog arthritis like dog rheumatoid arthritis, it is highly recommend to get liquid glucosamine for your lovely dogs. Don’t delay.
